Inches
Inches from the pavement..
Death's a million miles away
Only gods, and children,
Are so sublime at play.
Inches from the pavement
Sparks fly, rubber's shed...
Tires whine, and the wind whistles
I'm alone....inside my head
Inches from the pavement
My shining moment of grace
Everyone, everything before me
Disappears, without a trace
Inches from the pavement
Troubles vanquished...and i'm "spaced"
The smile of a ten year-old
With a new bicycle
Flashes across my face
Inches from the pavement
Fragile existence moot
Pavement screaming past
Kisses the sole of my boot
Inches from the pavement
Life bows....to me
I transcend my worries
Naught to do...no place to be
Only inches from the pavement
Do i at last, morph into me
Inches from the pavement
I'm certain, my death awaits
And in hour unfamiliar
Shall i pass through that wondrous gate
Just inches from the pavement
