Our Land
Dawn breaks, above Woody's love
All dead, 'neath frozen flake
Our season's neglect
Spring promises, a nurturing thaw
Looms low on the horizon
And high in our hopes
They won't make it so, absent husbandry..
Naught will rise, save noxious weed
Lest the furrow be plow'd by callused hand
And the seed be buried gently
Deep, in loamy land
Even then, deed's undone
If our wary eye should wander
And let creep, that wild growing weed
So aptly named greed
That, minus vigilance
Might strangle a nation
Pray all, if such a thing can help
That trust's been well placed
And cards be fairly dealt..
Before sun sets, on our lovely land
